If you love holiday stories, holiday movies, made-for-TV-holiday specials, holiday episodes of your favorite sitcoms and, especially, if you love holiday anthologies, you’re going to fall in love with MY TRUE LOVE GAVE TO ME: TWELVE HOLIDAY STORIES by twelve bestselling young adult writers, edited by international bestselling author Stephanie Perkins.
List of authors: Stephanie Perkins, Holly Black, Ally Carter, Gayle Forman, Jenny Han, David Levithan, Kelly Link, Myra McEntire, Matt de la Pena, Rainbow Rowell, Laini Taylor, and Kiersten White. (Aka: tons of the biggest names in YA right now.)
Some stories were good, some were not.
The best: “It’s a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown” – Stephanie Perkins, “Midnights” – Rainbow Rowell, “What the hell have you done, Sophie Roth?” – Gayle Forman
The weird: “Krampuslauf” – Holly Black (I simply didn’t GET it), “The Girl Who Woke the Dreamer” – Laini Taylor, “The Lady and the Fox” – Kelly Link
You can probably see a pattern here. I really liked the contemporary ones and felt kind of confused by the somewhat paranormal ones. With Holly Black’s story, I felt like I was missing a ton of context. With Laini Taylor’s story, I felt like such a complex world could not be built in so few pages, making the story suffer. Overall, there was a really eclectic mix of genres and stories. You’d think that this would cover all bases, but it only made me long for more from the stories I liked and slog through the ones that did not suit my tastes.
- Chicken Soup for the Soul: Book of Christmas Virtues
- Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares – David Levithan and Rachel Cohn
