The Ex Games – Jennifer Echols

Brace yourself for the battle of the exes…

Hayden and Nick used to be a hot item, but their brief affair ended with a highly publicized breakup. Now the two are “just friends,” excluding the occasional flirtation.

When Hayden wins the girls’ division of a local snowboarding competition, Nick is unimpressed, claiming that Hayden wouldn’t have a chance against a guy. Hayden calls Nick’s bluff and challenges him to a head-to-head boarding contest. Their mutual friends quickly take sides, the girls on Hayden’s and the boys on Nick’s, making for an all-out battle of the sexes. This friendly competition is bound to get heated—and they might end up igniting some old flames.

Wonderful! Sweet! Sassy! Witty! The Ex Games, you win all the stars!!

It is most definitely still winter here in Canada, so I pretty much HAD to read this wintry read. As far as I know, snowboarding is TOUGH—so kudos to Hayden for kicking butt! …Seriously, people fall on their butts a lot while snowboarding.

Okay, so this wasn’t the most realistic book. Fainting at the sight of blood (at least it was explained?). A super mega rich meat heir. Nutty vegan health-freak parents. A friend with a hotel. Toss in some childhood bullying angst with teenage angst. Horrendous timing and more missed connections than Craig’s List. Serious boarding skills (like, celebrity/Olympics-worthy). But hey, this is an unashamed romantic comedy! It’s meant to be a zany romp! And for that goal, this book totally delivered. It didn’t go all Valley girl/Disney on me (no matter how much this review is sounding like one, ahhh). The writing told the story without getting in the way.

The ending was really, really farfetched. Injuries that mean nothing? Okay. Landing a HUUUGE, professional-level jump without ever having jumped before? Uh, okaaaaaaaaay. But I’ll forgive it for being so FUN. Hey book, thanks for helping me combat the winter blues. You’re a gem.
